ABOUT THE "SALEM'S MOST WANTED" CAMPAIGN:

1. Why now?
2. What's with the M&Ms?
3. Who are you and why create this site?

QUESTION #1. Why now?

  • The wedding of Jack and Jennifer -- something that should have been the passionate, romantic and touching peak of a storyline befitting a supercouple -- was ripped to shreds, with the bride not even getting to say her own vows!
  • In the episode prior to the ceremony, groom Jack was given less time than Jennifer's mother, a guest with almost no history with this Jack & Jennifer.
  • Matthew Ashford and Missy Reeves, two of the smartest, sexiest, intriguing, chemistry-laden actors in DOOL history, are being wasted in backburner hell, shown only in the silly "In the House" segments that are used to promote other storylines and -- even worse -- non-soap-related commercial tie-ins such as a country music singer and a sushi chef!
  • DOOL has just rehired James E. Reilly, a headwriter with a controversial history (to say the least) -- he's responsible for the bizarre soap Passions and, on DOOL, created Marlena's possession among other outrageous DOOL storylines. Reilly never quite seemed to understand what made Jack and Jennifer special, and indeed in interviews stated that he thought Jack wasn't "good enough" for Jennifer. As a result, Jack's dark background largely disappeared under Reilly's last reign, with few exceptions; much of his and Jennifer's multi-dimensionality did as well. Matt Ashford was fired and replaced, and Jack turned into a handsome, vapid goof. Jennifer fell prey to slimeballs and a plucky, impetuous heroine was reduced to victim status. We can't let this happen again!
  • However, Reilly may not be a lost cause: he has utilized some of J&J's history before -- witness his use of Jack's past dumping of toxic waste in order to bring up Abby's aplastic anemia. Though it did, alas, culminate in Jack/Matt's departure, it was a relevant and recognizable depiction of who Jack was.
  • According to a message from Drake Hogestyn (John Black) to fans (posted by fans at The Blue Note forum), Reilly is currently "re-evaluating" everything on the Salem canvas.

That's why NOW is the time for letting Reilly, Corday and NBC know that we want to see the real Jack and Jennifer -- portrayed by Matt and Missy, and with their true history and characterization intact!

Yes, they may not listen. Yes, we may be fighting against the odds. But we should do so anyway. Let's fight against the odds because Jack and Jennifer did -- because Matt and Missy and the audience itself deserve no less.

Remember: without raising our voices we cannot be heard!

QUESTION #2 - What's with the M&Ms?

To support our favorite daytime duo, we've been sending M&M candies (and related items!) to TPTB, reminding them that Matt & Missy are yummy and shouldn't melt on the backburner!

For more info, here's a terrific post from Michelle, aka HJBJDJ of The Connotator (the spot for Jack/Jennifer fans!), the woman who spearheaded the M&M campaign last time. Post courtesy of The Connotator:

The M&Ms may be sent in ANY form you wish to send them

Fun size, empty wrappers, BIG bags. or M&M promotional merchandise. Last time several peopel sent in M&M mugs, stuffed animals etc..etc .. The M&Ms and their trademark have become a signature of our campaign so anything related to M&Ms are fair game!

What we did last time we did this our goal was to say we wanted a storyline for J&J, and them together.

This time our goal is to make TPTB know that WE WANT them. They are what we want on the show. As Days, NBC and Reilly make these critical desicions in the coming weeks we want them to know what WE WANT is Jack and Jennifer.

This part we keep simple. We just WANT THEM JACK AND JENNIFER. (sort of round about way of saying we want them to keep Jack and Jennifer) The M&Ms and simple straight to the point flyer get the message across well. And the M&Ms particulatly make our objective known.

It is important to send the M&Ms to not only M&M but also the people we really want to get the attention of and let know that WE WANT JACK AND JENNIFER. That would be Reilly, NBC head of Daytime, Corday and other Producers. Other cast members, directors, writers are also a good target. The M&Ms will get them talking about Jack and Jennifer and Matt and Missy.

The other part of the campaigning is LETTERS
It is in the letters you tell TPTB just what we want for Jack and Jennifer.. ie.. storyline ideas, for them to be on 2-3 times a week ect. Those are where you can get into more detail.

QUESTION #3 - Who are you and why create this site?

I'm Kira, a fan of Jack Deveraux/Matthew Ashford since early 1988 (and Jack/Jennifer since the day she first stepped into his office!), and I created the site to provide a useful resource for me and my fellow J/J fans in this quest to get our favorite duo back on the frontburner where they belong! Posts at the Connotator have been tremendously helpful, filled with cool fliers, funny and pertinant slogans, contact names & addresses, and lots of campaign tips -- but sometimes specific info can be hard to find. This site is just my way of contributing to the 'cause' -- the best way I can!

Prior to forging a career as a freelance writer and web designer, I was employed at CBS Daytime, where (as assistant to the director) I was responsible for reading and responding to viewer mail -- which is how I know that the networks really do listen! I also edited and developed content for the network's official As The World Turns and Guiding Light websites.

If you're like me and miss the interwoven, angsty plotlines of classic DOOL, you might want to visit the longrunning web-based series, About Schuyler Falls, which premiered in 1997 and was created (by myself and two other soap-loving writers) out of frustration over the dismal state of TV soap operas ... especially DOOL.

Please let me know if you have suggestions for the site! You can send an email, fill in the easy feedback form, or post on our guestbook. Thank you!
