Odd casting abounded in "A Stranger Among Us," chiefly Melanie Griffith as an undercover cop (!) pretending to be a Hassidic Jew(!!). So hey, why not cast WASPy-looking Jake Weber as a Hassidic man, who--in the grand tradition of many early Jake roles--ends up dead before too long? Seems logical to me!
